Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) was renamed after the independence of Bangladesh in 1971 from East Pakistan Fisheries Development Institution of the then Pakistan. Kaptai Lake was made for hydroelectric production in 1961 through making a dam on Karnafuli River at Kaptai Upazila. To use the possibility of fish production in this artificially created vast water body the than East Pakistan Fisheries Development Institution was authorized in 1964. Under the authorization of BFDC, Kaptai Lake Fisheries Development and Marketing Centre is successfully handling fish conservation, management, capture and marketing in Kaptai Lake from 1964 to till date.
